"BALLAD OF EASY RIDER"

Gwiazda i autor scenariusza filmu "Easy Rider", Peter Fonda, chciał aby Bob Dylan napisał piosenkę przewodnią filmu. Jednak Dylan odmówił.
W zamian, jeszcze przed poinformowaniem Fondy, żeby przekazał tekst Roger'owi McGuinn'owi, szybko napisał na serwetce wersy: "The river flows, it flows to the sea/Wherever that river goes, that's where I want to be/Flow, river, flow". Frontman zespołu The Byrds wziął pierwsze wersy i dodał pozostałe, a potem muzykę. 

Kiedy Dylan zobaczył prywatny pokaz filmu okazało się, że jest dopisany jako współautor przewodniej piosenki. Wtedy zadzwonił do McGuinn'a i zażądał, żeby usunięto jego nazwisko. Podobno nie spodobało mu się zakończenie filmu. 

Wersja piosenki "Ballad of Easy Rider" użyta w filmie i zawarta w soundtracku, zawiera solo McGuinn'a, który akompaniuje sobie na gitarze akustycznej i pomaga mu członek zespołu, Gene Parsons, grający na harmonijce. Ta wersja różni się szybszym tempem, od wersji wydanej na płycie The Byrds "Ballad of Easy Rider".

The star and script writer of 'Easy Rider', Peter Fonda, had wanted Bob Dylan to write the film's theme song. However, he declined. Instead, Dylan quickly scribbled a lyric fragment: 'The river flows, it flows to the sea/Wherever that river goes, that's where I want to be/Flow, river, flow' on to a napkin, before telling Fonda to give it to Roger McGuinn. The Byrds frontman took Dylan's lines turning them into the first verse then expanded upon them with his own lyrical and musical contributions.

When Dylan saw a private screening of 'Easy Rider' and realized that he had been credited as co-writer on its theme song, he telephoned McGuinn and demanded that his name be removed from the credits. It's believed that Dylan hated the film's ending.

The version of 'Ballad of Easy Rider' used in the film and included on the 'Easy Rider' soundtrack album is listed as a solo performance by Roger McGuinn and features McGuinn accompanying himself on acoustic guitar with fellow Byrd Gene Parsons playing harmonica. The version that The Byrds would later release as a single and include on their 'Ballad of Easy Rider' album is a completely different take performed at a quicker tempo.
